The Urban Living Room: MVRDV’s Shenzhen Terraces Form a Uniquely 3D Public Space

Do you have an intriguing project with an innovative design that creates natural environments? Considering entering it in the Architecture +Landscape category for the 8th Annual A+Awards, open for entries until May 8th, 2020.

Centered around sustainability, MVRDV’s Shenzhen Terraces development will form the core of a thriving university neighborhood in Universiade New Town, Longgang District, Shenzhen. Set for construction at the city’s Shimao ShenKong International Center, the 101,300-square-meter mixed use development will serve as a new three-dimensional “urban living room”.

Shenzhen Terraces will contain more than 20 programs, including a small gallery, library, outdoor theatre, and conference center. According to MVRDV, “Shenzhen Terraces aims to bring vitality and innovation to the area through a seamless integration of landscape, leisure, commerce and culture.”

Through wide, irregularly shaped, stacked plateaus for its various buildings, the development will seamlessly merge with the existing landscape.  This will present a stark contrast to the imposing, vertical high-rises that are heavily present in the area.

Shenzhen Terraces is set to become a sustainable hub for the surrounding area. Developed in collaboration with Openfabric, the project’s prominent landscaping imitates the sub-tropical natural forests of the region. It will host an abundance of planting and water features, which will reduce the local temperature and provide a habitat for urban wildlife.

Gardens and rainwater collection will generate food and water resources, and according to MVRDV, the building materials will add further to the projects sustainable credentials. “The concrete used in the buildings themselves will be made using recycled concrete as the aggregate, and photovoltaic panels will adorn extensive portions of the rooftops,” explained the architects.

The sporadic and overlapping nature of the buildings’ terraces will offer plenty of ample space to escape the hot sun and leisurely enjoy the surrounding views. At strategic points, the terraces will dip to connect different floors and create small, outdoor atriums.

All of the buildings will be linked at the second floor through bridging elements, which will extend and connect the development to the city. This will make Shenzhen Terraces one with the city, providing access for all.

Located in a city that has experienced incredible growth over a short period of time, MVRDV’s Shenzhen Terraces looks set to provide a distinct public space that marks a change of pace from its urban surroundings.
